PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) — Can where you live have an effect on if you have a child born with autism?

The Centers for Disease Control says that one out of 88 kids are affected with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder), which is why the University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health and Dr. Evelyn Talbot are performing a study to find out if the environment and people’s surroundings is a precursor to autism.

They are looking at western Pennsylvania because there is a lot of industry, and we have ozone and air pollution issues.

Other potential problems that Dr. Talbot said is people living by highways.

“I don’t think it’s any secret that autism was virtually unknown in the ’70s and early ’80s,” Talbot Said. “Then, it went from one in 5,000 to one in 1,000 to one in 500, and then one in 250 in 2000.”

Recent reports are that it is down to one in 50 and boys are four times more likely to suffer from autism then girls.

The University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health is still looking for people to get involved in the study.

You can go to http://www.childhoodautism.pitt.edu/ to find out more about the study and be a part of it. They are looking into surrounding areas which are Beaver, Butler, Allegheny, Armstrong and Washington.
